Polar Pattern
Polar pattern identifies the microphone’s directional capabilities, its ability to pick up the desired sound in a certain direction while rejecting unwanted sound from other directions. It is defined by the directions from which the microphone is optimally sensitive. Polar pattern is also called pick-up pattern or a microphone’s directionality.
Omnidirectional
Sound pickup is uniform in all directions.
Cardioid
Heart-shaped polar patterns. Pickup is from the front of the microphone only (one direction) in a cardioid pattern. It rejects sounds coming from the side, but the most rejection is at the rear of the microphone.
Hypercardioid
More directional than the regular cardioid because it rejects more sound from the side, while some sound will be picked up directly at the rear of the microphone.
Supercardioid
Better directionality than the hypercardioid, rejection from the side is better while more rear pickup than the hypercardioid.

bidirectional pick-up equal in opposite directions, with little or no pickup from the sides.
