A typical multipoint video bridge embedded within a video endpoint supports only a limited number of participants, usaully four, and provides a limited feature set.

To serve the needs of communicating with more than 4 participants with richer features, UAT provides multipoint bridging service for hosting their multipoint video meetings. The most common way to conduct a multipoint video meeting is for each participating video conferencing system to connect to a single bridging device called a multipoint video bridge.

Multipoint bridging is having each conferencing endpoint connect to the video bridge instead of to the other endpoints directly. In this case, the burden on each video system is limited as the processing is performed centrally by the video bridge, and minimal bandwidth requirements at each video system.
